On January 20, 2015 the Schomburg Center in Harlem, New York hosted “Between the Lines: Vintage Black Glamour” a discussion and book signing with author Nichelle Gainer in conversation with journalist, A’Lelia Bundles, whose great-grandmother, A’Lelia Walker, is featured in the book. They were introduced on stage by Dr. Khalil Gibran Muhammad, the director of the Schomburg Center, for an insightful look into the stories behind the photographs.
Vintage Black Glamour is the new book by author Nichelle Gainer. It is a wonderful retrospect of stunning photographs of both known, and less known women who shaped an era. These were Renaissance women taking us beyond their beauty and fashion. They were multi-talented influential women who broke barriers, fought for civil rights, and succeeded against all odds.
The book presents the work of legendary photographers whose historical photographs give us a glimpse of a days gone by. It features the author’s aunt, opera singer Margaret Tynes, along with legends Eartha Kitt, Ruby Dee, Josephine Baker, Dorothy Dandridge, Cicely Tyson, Lena Horne, Phyllis Hyman, and many more, including Maya Angelou during her Calypso days.
Vintage Black Glamour has received high acclaim from the New York Times to O, Oprah magazine. It is a gorgeous book which should adorn every coffee table.
