Our 45 years of Disco Spotlight shines on legend Wardell Piper. She is one of the first ladies of Disco. Her professional career began in 1971.

In 1971 and 1973 she recorded with the group First Choice at Sigma Sound Studios, Philadelphia, PA. In 1971 she was the vocals on “This is the House Where Loved Died”, and in 1972  on “Armed and Extremely Dangerous”. By 1973 Wardell left for her solo career.

In 1978 Wardell’s solo recording “Captain Boogie” was a chart hit; thereafter her album was released in 1979 on Midsong International Records. Others releases include “Super Sweet” 1979 which was #20 on the charts in 1980, “The Power of Love” 1980, “Come On Back To Mama” 1983, and “Nobody (Can Take You From Me)” 1984.

In 1999 she recorded with the David Banks Project “Good Lovin’” on Catch 22 Records; and more recently her hit “The Power of Love” was re-mixed by legend Tom Moulton.

On August 6, 2014, Wardell joined First Choice for a Salsoul reunion concert at East River Bandshell, New York City, with original members Rochelle Fleming, Annette Guest, and Ursula Herring. The concert featured many of the group’s ex-label mates from Salsoul records. First Choice is a disco female group formed in 1971 known for hits “Dr. Love”, “Let No Man Put Asunder”, “Armed and Extremely Dangerous”, “Smarty Pants”, “The Player”, “Love Thang”, and many more.

On October 10th and 11th, 2014, the G.E.M.A. Foundation held its Annual DISCO Weekend in Wilmington, Delaware, which consisted of an awards luncheon, show, and after party. Wardell was among the honorees for her contributions; and was also presented with a Citation from Councilman David Oh of Philadelphia, PA.

Wardell Piper along with Dee Wellmon and Maria Lozada are board members of the G.E.M.A. Foundation (The Global Entertainment Media Arts Foundation): http://www.thegemafoundation.org/Events.html

Wardell Piper is expected to head back to the studio this year; we are looking forward to her extraordinary music for many more years to come.
