Leon Russell (born Claude Russell Bridges; April 2, 1942; Lawton, Oklahoma) is a Grammy Award winning singer, songwriter, musician, music arranger, and recording studio owner. He has recorded as a session musician, sideman, worked with countless famous colleagues; and maintained a solo music career. His style of music includes Rock, Blues, Soul, Jazz, Rockabilly, Country, Blue Grass, and Pop. He is one of the greatest living songwriters, best known for “A Song For You”; a song he written and originally recorded for his first solo album self-entitled Leon Russell, which was released in 1970 on Shelter Records. “A Song For You” has been recorded by countless artists, most notably Donny Hathaway, Cher, Joe Cocker, Carpenters, Merry Clayton, Dusty Springfield, Helen Reddy, Carmen McRae, Peggy Lee, Mavis Staples, Betty Wright, Aretha Franklin, Nancy Wilson, The Temptations, David Cassidy, Neil Diamond, Petula Clark, Shirley Horn, Herbie Hancock, Ray Charles, Elton John, Beyoncé, Sylvester, Amy Winehouse, Whitney Houston, and countless others.  His other hits written and recorded include “This Masquerade” made most famous by George Benson, “Tight Rope”, “Lady Blue”, “Stranger In A Strange Land”, “Delta Lady”, “Hummingbird”, and “Superstar” a 1969 song he wrote with Bonnie & Delaney Bramlett that has been a hit for many artists in different genres and interpretations in the years since; including Rita Coolidge and Luther Vandross, with the best-known version by the Carpenters in 1971. He began his musical career in Oklahoma at the age of 14 in night clubs, and was a member of a group The Starlighters. They were instrumental in creating the style of music known as the Tulsa Sound. In the 1960s he went to Los Angeles becoming a first call studio musician for major artists, and can be seen in the 1964 T.A.M.I Show playing piano with the Wrecking Crew, a nickname coined by drummer Hal Blaine for a group of studio and session musicians that played anonymously on many records in Los Angeles during the 1960s. The crew backed dozens of popular singers, and were one of the most successful groups of studio musicians in music history; and were occasionally featured on productions by Phil Spector. In 1969, he was a member of Delaney & Bonnie, playing guitar and keyboards. There he met George Harrison and others with whom he would work with over the years. His first commercial success as a songwriter came when Joe Cocker recorded the song “Delta Lady” for his 1969 album, Entitled Joe Cocker. The album, co-produced and arranged by Russell, reached #11 on the Billboard 200. Russell went on to organize—using many of the musicians from Delaney & Bonnie’s band to perform in Joe Cocker’s 1970 Mad Dogs and Englishmen tour. In 1970, the same year as the tour, he released his first solo album self-entitled Leon Russell, that December, Leon Russell and Friends recorded the “Homewood Sessions”, broadcast as “unscripted and unrehearsed” one-hour TV special on KCET TV (Los Angeles) and later re-broadcast several times on the Public Broadcasting System. In the Summer of 1971, he join George Harrison in New York to participate in the Concert For Bangladesh. He has worked with George Harrison, Joe Cocker, Marc Benno, Willie Nelson, B.B. King, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, and Elton John, to name a few. In 1976, he released Wedding Album recorded in the studio with his then wife, Mary Russell, otherwise known as Mary McCreary. It was the first album released on Leon Russell’s record label, Paradise Records, which was distributed by Warner Bros. Records. In the 1970s and 1980s he performed Country music under the name Hank Wilson. He has been credited on writings and recordings as Russell Bridges as well. He was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on March 14, 2011, and in June, 2011, was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. On March 16, 2015, a restored version of the previously unreleased 1974 documentary about Russell, A Poem Is A Naked Person, by filmmaker Les Blank, was screened publicly at the South by Southwest Film Festival. The film features concert footage of Russell in New Orleans, Louisiana, and Anaheim, California, and footage of the recording sessions for the album Hank Wilson’s Back. A New York debut screening and Q&A discussing the film with Russell was held at the Film Forum, New York, July 1, 2015.
