Nobel Laureate Toni Morrison is one of the most decorated living authors worldwide. She is America’s only living Nobel Laureate for Literature. In 1993, she became the first and only African-American woman to be awarded this honor. She received the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1988 for her novel Beloved, which was recognized as the single best work of American fiction published in the last 25 years. She was awarded The Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2012, is listed as “100 Greatest Writers of All Time”, and is a Professor Emeritus at Princeton University.

There are 110 winners of the Nobel Prize for Literature, only 13 are women, only 2 are from the United States of America, and only 1 is African-American. Noble Laureate Toni Morrison is the first and only African-American women to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature, and is the second American woman. She is the eighth woman to win a Nobel Prize.

“America’s national writer, their First Lady of Literature” —BBC Documentary, 2015

BBC Documentary Video on YouTube:

Nobel Prize winner Toni Morrison is America’s first lady of literature. Her books encompass black American history but live and breathe in the present, rich in vivid characters, haunted by ghosts. Born poor in Ohio in 1931, she now lives in New York. She tells Alan Yentob how her father hated whites so much he wouldn’t let them in the house. Her masterpiece, Beloved, shows the horrors of slavery perhaps better than any other artwork. She talks as she writes – with warmth and wit. Contributors include Angela Davis (whose biography she edited), Taiye Selasi, Janis A. Mayes, Paula Giddings, Hilton Als, Fran Lebowitz, Toni’s book editor Robert Gottlieb, opera soprano Jessye Norman, and more.
