To be “sent” by a jazz performer is, in the lingo of ’30s hepcats, to be thrilled — transported. The way singer Sarah Vaughan sent three generations of jazz fans. And now a stamp is being issued to posthumously honor the Newark-born jazz legend. She joins the distinguished company of other jazz greats honored with stamps: Billie Holiday (1994), Louis Armstrong (1995), Ella Fitzgerald (2007) and Miles Davis (2012).

Sarah Lois Vaughan (March 27, 1924, Newark, NJ – April 3, 1990) was an American Jazz singer whose career began in 1942; she was described as having one of the most wondrous voices of the 20th century. In both jazz and pop she had a talent for improvisation and skillful phrasing with a voice that ranged over several octaves. Her nicknames were “Sassy”, “The Diving One” and “Sailor” (for her salty speech). Sarah Vaughan was a Grammy Award winner, and The National Endowment for the Arts bestowed upon her its “highest honor in jazz”, the NEA Jazz Masters Award, in 1989. Sarah Vaughan recordings were inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, which is a special Grammy award established in 1973 to honor recordings that are at least twenty-five years old, and that have “qualitative or historical significance.” They include her 1946 jazz single “If You Could See Me Now”, inducted 1998, and her 1954 jazz album Sarah Vaughan with Clifford Brown, inducted 1999.
