The Toni Morrison Society held its Seventh Biennial Conference: Toni Morrison and Her Role as Editor, The Roosevelt Hotel, New York, July 21–24, 2016.
The 4-day conference included Plenary Panels, Authors’ and Editors’ Luncheon, a evening gala celebration honoring Ms. Morrison’s belated 85th birthday, and the twentieth Bench by the Road Placement at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in Harlem, New York.

Thursday, July 21st: Welcome. Friday, July 22nd: Authors’ and Editors’ Luncheon with writer Chris Jackson and Erroll McDonald the Vice President – Executive Editor of Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group of Random House, Inc. Saturday, July 23rd: Gala Celebration Honoring Nobel Laureate Toni Morrison with Phylicia Rashād, Mistress of Ceremonies; soprano Marti Newland performing “Love Triptych” (Margaret’s Lullaby, A Quality Love, and Intermezzo and Soliloquy) from Margaret Garner, an opera in two acts composed by Richard Danielpour to an English-language libretto by Toni Morrison; Jazz performance by Onaje Allan Gumbs Trio; video greetings from New York’s First Lady Chirlane McCray, Wynton Marsalis, Gloria Steinem, Sonia Sanchez, Louis Massiah, Fran Lebowitz, Peter Sellars, Kenny Leon, Eleanor Traylor, Tina Benko, Rokia Traoré, and many more; New York Mayor Bill de Blasio’s Proclamation declaring Saturday, July 23, 2016 “Toni Morrison Day”; and a birthday cake to celebrate Ms. Morrison’s belated 85th birthday. Sunday, July 24th: Twentieth Bench by the Road Placement at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in Harlem, guests included Sonia Sanchez and Walter Mosley.
Conference panelists included: “Toni Morrison and Her Role as Editor”— Dana Williams (Professor of English, Howard University). “Authors Toni Morrison Edited”— Angela Davis (Emerita/University of California-Santa Cruz), John McCluskey (Emeritus/Indiana University-Bloomington), Quincy Troupe (Emeritus/University of California-San Diego). “Toni Morrison As Author and Editor: Her Impact and Influence”— Edwidge Danticat (Writer), Tayari Jones (Rutgers University-Newark College of Arts and Sciences). “The Origin and Meaning of The Black Book”— Howard Rambsy (Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville) and Cheryl Wall (Rutgers University). “Publishing Today: Its Challenges to Black Writers”— John McCluskey (Emeritus/Indiana University-Bloomington), Paula Giddings (Smith College), Kiese Laymon (Vassar College), Martha Southgate (Vermont College of Fine Arts), Rachel Kaadzi Ghansah (Essayist and Critic).
Nobel laureate Toni Morrison (born Chloe Ardelia Wofford; February 18, 1931; Lorain, Ohio) is one of the most decorated living authors worldwide. She is America’s only living Nobel Laureate for Literature. In 1993, she became the first and only African-American woman to be awarded this honor. She received the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1988 for her novel Beloved, which was recognized as the single best work of American fiction published in the last 25 years. She was awarded The Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2012, is listed as “100 Greatest Writers of All Time”, and is a Professor Emeritus at Princeton University.
