Broadway’s DREAMGIRLS Celebrates its 35th Anniversary by Photojournalist Lisa Pacino

Dreamgirls celebrates its 35th anniversary since its Broadway debut- world premiere on December 20, 1981 at the Imperial Theatre, New York; music by Henry Krieger and lyrics and book by Tom Eyen.

The Broadway musical Dreamgirls is based on the show business aspirations and successes of music acts such as The Supremes and The Shirelles, the musical follows the story of a young female singing trio from Chicago, Illinois called “The Dreams”, who become music superstars. The original cast starred Jennifer Holliday, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Loretta Devine, Ben Harney, Cleavant Derricks, and Obba Babatundé. In 1982, the musical was nominated for 13 Tony Awards, including the Tony Award for Best Musical, and won six.

Dreamgirls: Original Broadway Cast Album was produced by David Foster and issued on Geffen Records label February 25, 1982. The Dreamgirls cast album features cast performances by the show’s performers, including Jennifer Holliday, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Loretta Devine, Ben Harney, Cleavant Derricks, Obba Babatundé, and Vondie Curtis-Hall. It features the classic songs “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going”, “I Am Changing”, “Listen”, and “One Night Only”. In 1983, the album won the Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album, and Jennifer Holliday received the Grammy Award for Best R&B Vocal Performance, Female for “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going”.

Dreamsgirls was later adapted into a motion picture from DreamWorks and Paramount Pictures in 2006. The film starred Jennifer Hudson, Beyoncé, Anika Noni Rose, Jamie Foxx, Eddie Murphy, and Danny Glover.
