The Kennedy Center present the final U.S. performances of one of Hip Hop’s most influential artists, yasiin bey, with special guests each night. The Kennedy Center present the final U.S. performances of one of Hip Hop’s most influential artists– yasiin bey (formerly known as Mos Def). These special engagements follow bey’s announcement earlier this year of his retirement from the music business. He performed at the Apollo Theater on December 21st and 22nd, and culminating at the Kennedy Center from Saturday, December 31, 2016 through Monday, January 2, 2017.
Every show will offer a unique musical experience, with bey performing songs from a different album each night including The New Danger, True Magic, The Ecstatic, and Black on Both Sides, alongside new material. Each performance will also welcome surprise special guests from a fluid roster that includes Robert Glasper, Slick Rick, and Talib Kweli, among others. The set lists and collaborators for each concert will remain unannounced, inviting an up-to-the-moment improvisational edge for audiences and artists alike. Additionally, the Kennedy Center shows will serve as a New Year’s Eve celebration and will feature a post-show party in the Grand Foyer.
Following his final U.S. performances, bey will venture to Africa to focus on his arts, culture, and lifestyle collective A Country Called Earth (ACCE). He will also continue to pursue his newly formed artistic passions as a painter.
yasiin bey is proud to announce that he has signed on as Creative Director for the New York and Cape Town based lifestyle brand, Unknown Union. As Creative Director, yasiin bey will oversee new design concepts and collaborations for Unknown Union, including a project with his media channel and design collective A Country Called Earth. Unknown Union’s new direction is exemplified by the launch of The Original Royals Collection made from the traditional blankets of the Basotho people. These blankets have a history that dates back over 150 years and form the basis of a proud living tradition and cultural legacy that is interwoven into the very social fabric of Basotho life. Authentic Basotho blankets are exclusively manufactured by Aranda Textile Mills in partnership with the royal family of Lesotho. Unknown Union is the only company in the world that has been granted the right to create apparel from this national treasure. The Original Royals Collection will be debuted at (capsule) Las Vegas, Nevada February 15th – 17th, 2017.
