Pretty Yende, OIS (The Order of Ikhamanga, a South African honour, the Silver (OIS) is for excellent achievement) is a South African operatic soprano born 6 March 1985. She has performed leading roles at opera houses internationally, including Teatro all Scala in Milan, Italy and the Metropolitan Opera in New York.

An opera Haiku contest was held with the winner announced Monday, January 2, 2017 to win tickets to The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in New York on January 3, 2017. It will feature a special guest performance by Met soprano Pretty Yende.

Pretty graduated from the South African College of Music and the Accademia Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Italy. She won first prize in operetta and opera at the International Hans Gabor Belvedere Singing Competition 2009 in Vienna, and in 2010 the first prize at the Vincenzo Bellini International Competition. In 2011, she won first prize at Operalia, which is The World Opera Competition, held that year in Moscow. It is an annual international competition for opera singers founded by Plácido Domingo in 1993. In 2012, she sang the role of Musetta in Giacomo Puccini’s opera La bohème at La Scala in Milan. She made her Metropolitan Opera debut in New York City on 17 January 2013, in the role of Adèle in Gioachino Rossini’s opera Le comte Ory. In 2015 she portrayed Susanna in Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro (The Marriage of Figaro) at the Los Angeles Opera. In 2016 she portrayed Rosina in Rossini’s Il Barbiere di Sivilgia (The Barber of Seville) and the title role in Gaetano Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor at the Paris Opera. For ten performances, January 9th to February 11th, 2017, she will be performing at the Metropolitan Opera in the role of Rosina in Rossini’s Il Barbiere di Sivilgia alongside Javier Camarena. In March, she returns to the Metropolitan Opera House for five performances of Charles Gounod’s Romeo et Juliette in a production by Bartlett Sher that made its New York debut on New Years Eve 2016.

“Rossini has accompanied me to many doors. Maybe I wouldn’t have had the same success had I gone with another composer.” South African soprano Pretty Yende is speaking in Pesaro, Italy, Gioachino Rossini’s birthplace, so the composer is naturally on her mind. It is indeed striking how many of her debuts have been in Rossini operas. In 2010, while still a member of La Scala’s young-artists’ program, she made her debut on Milan’s great stage as Berenice in L’Occasione Fa il Ladro. —Pretty Yende, Opera News, December 2016

Pretty Yende will sign autographs for her fans of her new album at the Met Opera Shop in New York on February 6, 2017. Her new album, released on Sony Music Entertainment, entitled A Journey, features many standards of the lyric soprano repertoire.
