The new adaptation of Orwell’s iconic dystopian novel, created by Robert Icke and Duncan Macmillan, heads to New York after four wildly successful U.K. runs. The strictly limited engagement will open on Thursday, June 22, 2017. This production of 1984 was originally produced in the U.K. in 2013 by Headlong, Nottingham Playhouse, and the Almeida Theatre, London.

One of the most widely referenced and best known fiction titles of all time, 1984 was first published in 1949. Interest in the title has spiked in recent weeks, as the New York Times reported on January 24, 2017 in an article titled George Orwell’s 1984 Is Suddenly a Best-Seller, stating, “George Orwell’s classic book 1984, about a dystopian future where critical thought is suppressed under a totalitarian regime, has seen a surge in sales this month, rising to the top of multiple best-seller lists in the United States and leading its publisher to have tens of thousands of new copies printed.” Currently the #1 title on Amazon’s bestseller list, 1984 has sold more than 30 million copies worldwide and has been translated into more than 65 languages around the globe.

Nineteen Eighty-Four often published as 1984, is a dystopian novel by English author George Orwell published in 1949. The novel is set in Airstrip One (formerly known as Great Britain), a province of the superstate Oceania in a world of perpetual war, omnipresent government surveillance, and public manipulation. The superstate is under the control of the privileged elite of the Inner Party, a party and government that persecutes individualism and independent thinking as “thoughtcrime”, which is enforced by the “Thought Police”. George Orwell was born Eric Arthur Blair in British India on 25 June 1903. He passed away 21 January 1950 in London, England.
