Broadway’s The Color Purple is the winner of the Best Musical Theater Album at The 59th Annual Grammy Awards, February 12, 2017.

The Color Purple is a musical with a book by Marsha Norman and music and lyrics by Stephen Bray, Brenda Russell, and Allee Willis. Based on the 1982 novel by Alice Walker, the show follows the journey of Celie, an African-American woman in the American South from the early to mid-20th century.
The Broadway revival began previews on November 10, 2015, with the official opening night on December 10, 2015 at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre, New York. Star Cynthia Erivo (Celie) won the 2016 Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical, with the production taking home the 2016 Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical. The production closed on January 8, 2017.
